The basic hook-up for a single REX (Request to Exit) device consists of the REX, a power supply, and a Maglock. When the REX sees motion, power is removed from the maglock. The power supply voltage must be between 12 and 24 VDC.
In this same configuration scenario, multiple REX devices may be connected in series. How that is done will be explained using the illustration below which is a general configuration for a Maglock and a single REX.
(A) Maglock - When installing a maglock, it is typical to install a REX at the door for free egress. Run an 18/2 wire from the maglock to the door controller.
NOTE: If possible, when installing a maglock, avoid using and wiring up the bond sensor at the maglock for a DPS. A bond sensor is a built-in DPS on a maglock. For some unknown reason, it is not compatible with our programming. When a DPS is required, install an actual DPS.
(B) REX - The REX is mounted in the desired location with an 18/5 wire from the REX to the controller (18/3 for a non-powered REX). Wire the REX to the controller and maglock as shown above. If reporting is not needed in the system, eliminate the green wire shown in the illustration.
NOTE: If using Bosch or WBOX brand REX devices, they need to be set in "Fail-Safe" configuration, so that NC (Normally Closed) and C (Common) work properly.
(C) Jumper - Use the designated (+) or (-) board voltage out of NO and NC. If the jumper is off, the relay is a standard dry contact needing input into common (C). In the above diagram, the jumper is placed on the (-) side to operate the maglock.
REX Series Wiring
-
Connect a wire from the Maglock positive (+) to the controller terminal block positive (+).
-
Connect a wire from the Maglock negative (-) to the REX device Normally Closed (NC).
-
Connect a wire from the REX negative (-) to the negative of either 12VDC output on the controller terminal block or any 12V power supply.
-
Connect a wire from the REX positive (+) to the positive of either 12VDC output on the controller terminal block or any 12V power supply.
-
To add a second REX device in series, connect a wire from the first REX Common (C) to Normally Closed (NC) on the second REX device.
-
Connect a wire from the REX Common (C) on the second REX device to Normally Closed (NC) on the controller terminal block.
For a third REX device:
- Connect a wire from Common (C) on the second REX device to Normally Closed (NC) on the third REX device.
- Connect a wire from Common (C) on the third REX device to Normally Closed (NC) on the controller terminal block.
This process can be repeated for any additional REX devices to be added.
REX DIP Switch Settings
DIP Switches 1, 2, 3 - Latch Time
DIP switches 1, 2, and 3 set the Relay Latch Time. Latch Time is the amount of time the relay remains active after the REX detector first sees motion. Latch Time is adjustable from 0.5 sec to 64 seconds.
Table 1: Latch Time DIP Switch Settings
Time (seconds) | Switch 1 | Switch 2 | Switch 3 |
0.5 (Default) | OFF | OFF | OFF |
1 | ON | OFF | OFF |
2 | OFF | ON | OFF |
4 | ON | ON | OFF |
8 | OFF | OFF | ON |
16 | ON | OFF | ON |
32 | OFF | ON | ON |
64 | ON | ON | ON |
DIP Switch 4 - LED
Table 2: DIP Switch Settings to enable/disable the LED
Switch 4 | Function |
OFF | Disabled |
ON | Enabled (Default) |
When LED is enabled, it will flash on and off when first powered up. Once the flashing LED stops, the REX is ready to be used.
DIP Switch 5 - Relay Mode
- A fail-secure locking device remains locked when power is lost.
- A fail-safe locking device unlocks when power is lost.
Table 3: DIP Switch Settings for Relay Mode
Switch 5 | Function |
OFF | Fail Secure |
ON | Fail-Safe (Default) |
DIP Switch 6 - Resettable / Non-resettable
Resettable: The relay activates when the detector first sees motion. Any additional motion restarts the latch timer so the relay deactivates only when the detector no longer sees motion and the latch time has expired. Hint: This setting works best when bypassing a 24-hour contact.
Non-resettable: The relay activates when the detector first sees motion. It deactivates when the latch time ends, even if motion is still present. Hint: This setting works best when used with an access control system.

Switch 6 | Function |
OFF | Non-resettable |
ON | Resettable (Default) |
