A common question with the Red-series Controllers is "How do the Controllers determine if a firmware update is required and how the firmware is updated?" This article will explain how updated firmware is installed on a Red-series Controller.
When a Red-series controller is first connected to a Cloud Node on a Customer Account, the PDK Cloud Server will compare the firmware version on the Controller to the current firmware available for the Controller. If the Controller needs a firmware update applied, the PDK Cloud Server will transfer the updated firmware to the Controller. When transferred through a WiMAC connection, transferring the updated firmware can require significant amount of time to complete.
Once the updated firmware has been transferred to the controller, the Controller will reboot to apply the new firmware. When the controller is rebooting, any connected hardware will also reboot, meaning the hardware will not respond at that time.
When a new firmware version is released, the PDK Cloud Server will confirm the firmware version of the installed Controllers and transfer the updated firmware in the same way as when a Controller is first installed.
