If a Controller needs to be replaced, all of its settings, rules, and connected device configurations can be transferred directly to a replacement unit through the Discovery tab. This replaces the old controller seamlessly, eliminating the need to manually reconfigure or reassign individual devices.
The following data will automatically transfer to the replacement controller:
- Port Assignments
- Device Name
- Groups
- Rules
- System Events
- Auto Open Schedules
- Partitions
- Integrations
Once completed, the new controller will automatically update to the latest firmware and synchronize.
Method 1: Replace via Existing Controller Settings
- Select the cogwheel icon on the Controller you wish to replace.
-
In the drawer, select Replace Controller.
- This will automatically discover nearby available controllers. If discovery does not run automatically, select Run Discovery.
- Search by MAC Address, WiMAC Address, or Controller type in the search bar.
- Select the replacement controller from the list, click Next, and then select Confirm to finalize.
Method 2: Replace via a Discovery Search
- Select Run Discovery to scan for available controllers.
- Click the + icon next to the detected replacement controller.
- In the drawer, select Replace Controller.
- Select the specific controller being replaced from the displayed list.
- Search by MAC Address, WiMAC Address, Device Name, Controller Name, or Controller type in the search bar.
- Click Next, then select Confirm to finalize.
Controller Replacement Requirements
To qualify as a valid replacement, a controller cannot have any existing devices associated with it, with the exception of a Red Lock.
The table below outlines compatible replacement types:

NOTE: The replacement controller can have a different connection type from the controller being replaced (e.g., a Wireless-connected R2 can be replaced by an Ethernet-connected R4).
Inactive or Inoperable Ports
If you replace a controller with one that has fewer hardware ports (for example, replacing a Red 4 with a Red 2), any configurations for the extra ports (Ports 3 and 4) will become inactive and inoperable. To keep all ports active and functional, replace it with a controller with an equal or greater number of ports.
