Adding a Red-series Reader to a Cloud Node system, with or without Bluetooth, is a relatively straightforward process.
Before wiring the Red-series reader to the controller wiring harness, ensure the wiring harness is not connected to the controller and it is recommended to record the Reader Serial Number that is printed on the rear of the reader.
Attach the metal wall plate to either a single-gang box or on a uniform, flat surface (such as a sheetrock wall) as recommended in the manual. Then connect the wiring assembly from the reader to the wiring harness running to the controller in either Wiegand or OSDP configuration. Then connect the Red-series reader and wiring harness to the controller board. When the Red-series reader is connected to the controller board, the reader will do a series of audio/visual indicators to show the mode that the reader is in.
Reader Action | Meaning |
Green LED for 500ms | Red-series Credentials |
Amber LED for 500ms | Prox Credentials |
Beep/Red LED blink once for 200ms | Wiegand Wiring |
Beep/Green LED twice for 200ms each | OSDP Wiring |
Beep/Green LED four times for 200ms each | Auto-Detect |
Then align the reader to the tabs on the mounting plate, slide the reader into place, and secure it with the pin-in-torx screw under the front edge of the reader.
Once the reader is connected, configuring the Red-series reader in PDK.io is the next step. To begin, choose from the options below after going into Configuration from the Cloud Node dashboard.
- Use the Discovery tab to discover the Connection by tapping/clicking the magnifying glass with a radio symbol in it located in the lower right corner. Then locate the WIMAC address for the Controller in the list of Controllers, then tap or mouse over the Controller, tap/click 'Add Port', and then follow the 'Adding the Device' steps below.
- In the Device tab, tap/click the + icon in the lower right corner and then follow the 'Adding the Device' steps below.
Adding the Device
After starting the process to add a device through the options above,
- Tap/click the appropriate Device Type, normally 'Door or Gate'. The steps below will proceed based on the assumption that 'Door or Gate' was chosen.
- Choose between 'Primary Reader' (for a reader controlling the relay) or 'Additional Reader' (for a reader linked to a Primary Reader through programming). The steps below will proceed based on the assumption that 'Primary Reader' was chosen.
- Enter a name for the Device, select the appropriate icon, select the connection (if adding from the Device Tab), enter the Port on the controller for the Reader, and tap/click Add. If adding the Device from the Discovery Tab, placing a checkmark next to 'Open Connection Details after creating' will open the Connection information window after hitting Add.
Once the Device is added to the Cloud Node system, the next step is configuring the Reader type and any options for the Device. For more information regarding the options available in a Device, please refer to our article about Device Details.
For this article, a Red-series Reader with Bluetooth capability will be configured.
- By default, the 'Reader Type' in the Device will be set to Standard. Change the Reader Type to 'Red'.
- If the Reader is wired using Wiegand, the serial number on the rear of the Reader will need to be manually entered into the 'Reader Serial Number' field.
If the Reader is wired using OSDP, the field for 'Reader Serial Number' should auto-populate.
If the Reader is wired using OSDP and the 'Reader Serial Number' field does not auto-populate, this means the reader did not initialize in OSDP mode and will need to be reset. Instructions for doing this can be found in the article 'How to reset a Red Reader'. - If the Reader is capable of using Bluetooth Credentials and will be used, place a checkmark next to 'Support Bluetooth credentials'.
For information regarding the other Red-series Reader options, please refer to the article regarding Device Details, along with other Device options.
