Eight io Power Installation Overview

(A) 12VDC Power Supply - Use the positive (+) and negative (-) 12VDC output from the Altronix SMP10 power supply to the corresponding eight io positive (+) and negative (-) DC power input for devices using 12VDC that will be connected to the eight io (10 Amp Maximum).  

When using 24VDC, the controller MUST be powered with 12VDC to power readers, REX devices, etc. If 24VDC is required for other necessary devices, provide a second power supply with 24VDC which will then be fed into the common on each port relay for powering 24VDC devices. 

NOTE: An Altronix SMP10 power supply is required for the proper operation of the eight io controller. It is sold separately and NOT included with the eight io and is thus the responsibility of the installer/dealer. If required, documentation for the SMP10 is available at:

The MAXIMUM pass-through limit as a “dry contact” is 24 volts at 2 amps!

IMPORTANT: Jumpers must remain OFF on ports powering 24VDC hardware. Power to the eight io from the Altronix SMP10 power supply MUST be 12VDC ONLY. DO NOT power the eight io board with 24VDC. 

(C) Battery Backup - A backup battery connected to the power supply is HIGHLY recommended to prevent system failure in the event of an AC power loss. Connect the battery’s positive (+) and negative (-) terminals to the corresponding Altronix SMP10 power supply positive (+) and negative (-) DC battery input as shown above. The Altronix SMP10 includes a charging circuit for battery backup.

• Max Battery Pocket Dimensions: 6” (L) x 5” (H) x 4” (W) 

NOTE: For UL certified wire installations, all wire running from an eight io door controller to a lock, strike, or reader device MUST be less than 98.5 feet (30 meters).

Altronix Power Supply

The Altronix SMP10 power supply/charger converts low voltage AC input into 12VDC or 24VDC output at 10A of continuous supply current. This general-purpose power supply has a wide range of applications for access control, security, and CCTV system accessories that require additional power.

Battery Backup
