Mounting Instructions
Before beginning the installation, read these instructions thoroughly. Make sure you have read and understand the Safety Information.
WARNING: Disconnect power before working with the ProdataKey product. DO NOT mount the product while power is applied. Always apply power at the end of the installation after verifying wiring connections are correct; incorrect wiring could cause damage to the product.
Please follow these mounting suggestions for the eight io and Cloud Node:
- To optimize signal strength, mount the Cloud Node and eight io above the door frame or higher where possible.
- Strategic placement of the Cloud Node will optimize wireless communication with the controllers.
- Install the eight io in an environmentally controlled and secure area.
- Ensure the antenna is free from obstructions such as close proximity to metal beams and pillars, and high-power cables that may cause wireless interference.
These instructions allow you to easily fasten the box properly and securely to a wall surface. Prior to beginning, ensure you have the package contents, tools, and necessary materials for the installation on an appropriate surface (drywall, wood, etc.).
1. Use the door controller box to mark the four hole positions on the wall and drill holes into the surface. If mounting to drywall, insert anchors into the four holes to secure the screws to the surface.
2. Align the can’s holes to the holes in the wall surface and secure the box to the wall with the four screws so the box is securely fastened to the wall.
3. If the communication method is wireless, screw in the threaded antenna to the RP-SMA connector on top of the box. See Antenna Mounting Best Practices for additional information.
NOTE: For UL certified wire installations, all wire running from an eight io door controller to a lock, strike, or reader device MUST be less than 98.5 feet (30 meters).
4. Strip the ends of the wires as required.
5. Install the reader and attach the wires meeting your reader configurations. See Wiring Diagrams for additional information.
6. Connect the wires between the door controller and locks, doors, and other devices as required.
NOTE: For information about the connectors and their specifications and diagrams, refer to the appropriate wiring diagrams: Maglock, Fail-Secure Door Strike, and Fail-Safe Door Strike.
For devices that have been configured in the product’s hardware configuration pages, use the hardware pin charts as a guide on how to connect the pins. For information about hardware configuration and the hardware pin charts, see the Connectors section.
For information about connecting other wires, such as power wires to third-party locks, readers, and other devices, see the respective manufacturers’ instructions.
NOTE: An Altronix SMP10 power supply is required for the proper operation of the eight io controller. It is sold separately and NOT included with the eight io; it is the responsibility of the installer/dealer.
7. A backup battery is HIGHLY recommended to prevent system failure in the event of an AC power loss. Add the 12VDC 5.0 (minimum, but it depends on the components, and their amperage requirements, that are attached to the system) Ah lead-acid battery, attaching the wires from the battery to the power supply board battery terminal (C).

Communications Connections
NOTE: If two Cloud Nodes are in the same vicinity (even within a mile) and you are unable to detect a wireless device on the nearest Cloud Node, check the other Cloud Node in Discovery to see if it connected to the wrong Cloud Node.
(A) Wireless WiMAC - All wireless connections come pre-connected. If you find the antenna whip is off or your signal is weak you’ll want to check this connection. Be cautious when reconnecting.
NOTE: By default, wireless devices use what is known as DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), which automatically assigns a dynamic (temporary) IP address for a network. For eight io Ethernet connections, a static (permanent) IP address is REQUIRED; a static IP address is not required for Cloud Nodes.
(B) Ethernet - Ethernet connected gate controllers accept RJ45 connections. When used, the controller will be assigned a DHCP address. Controllers can be assigned a static IP address by using the Lantronix network utility software referred to below.
NOTE: To set up a static IP address for an Ethernet device, the third-party Lantronix DeviceInstaller application can be used. The suggested static IP address can be obtained from your IT manager or network administrator. The default dynamic IP address that is already assigned to the device by the router may also be used and converted to a static IP address.
Download the Lantronix DeviceInstaller (stand-alone version) at the Lantronix website for the necessary zip file (and DeviceInstaller Help, if necessary) to install and use this application.
NOTE: If or when you set a static IP on a Cloud Node and the Cloud Node does not come back online immediately, give it a few minutes. If it still does not come online then power cycle the Cloud Node for approximately 10 seconds; the Cloud Node should come back online.
Antenna Mounting Best Practices
The wireless reach of the antenna spreads out in a horizontal, donut-like pattern. Because the controller can be mounted horizontally or vertically, there are some best practices to consider regarding the antenna.
-
The antenna’s wireless signal strength has a one-mile line-of-sight range, or an indoor average of 450 feet, depending on the building’s construction type.
-
Consider the controller’s antenna direction.
-
When mounting the controller box vertically (A), (antenna protruding from the top) be sure the antenna is pointing straight up for the best signal.
-
When mounting the controller box horizontally (B), (antenna protruding from the side) turn the antenna pointing upward 90 degrees for the best signal.
-
For optimal signal strength, mount the controller vertically and approximately at head height or higher (D).
-
Install the controller in an environmentally-controlled and secure area.
-
Be mindful of the building’s construction and the controller’s location; positioning the antenna around metal or near high voltage can impair signal strength.
-
Installing multiple wireless door controllers close to each other is NOT ideal. For wireless controllers, a MINIMUM distance of 15 feet (or an ideal -35 to -60 dBm signal strength*) between controllers is recommended. Door controller antennas in close proximity can impair signal strength.
* Signal strength is represented in -dBm (decibel-milliwatts) format (0 to -100). dBm is used to indicate a power ratio expressed in decibels with reference to one milliwatt (mW) of the measured power.
Power
Backup Battery
A backup battery is HIGHLY recommended to prevent system failure in the event of an AC power loss. Using a battery that meets the following specifications will provide backup power in the event of an AC power loss.
- Recommended Battery Type: 12VDC 5.0 Ah lead-acid battery
- Recommended Battery Size: 4” (L) x 3.5” (H) x 3” (W)
- Max Battery Pocket Dimensions: 6” (L) x 5” (H) x 4” (W)
(A) 12VDC Power Supply - Use the positive (+) and negative (-) 12VDC output from the SMP10 power supply to the corresponding eight io positive (+) and negative (-) DC power input for devices using 12VDC that will be connected to the eight io (10 Amp Maximum).
24VDC - When using 24VDC, the controller MUST be powered with 12VDC to power readers, REX devices, etc. If 24VDC is required for necessary devices, provide a second power supply with 24VDC which will then be fed into the common on each port relay for powering 24VDC devices.
IMPORTANT: Jumpers must remain OFF on ports powering 24VDC hardware. Power to the eight io from the Altronix SMP10 power supply (shown in the illustration above) MUST be 12VDC ONLY. DO NOT power the eight io board with 24VDC.
The MAXIMUM pass-through limit as a “dry contact” is 24 volts at 2 amps!
(C) Battery Backup - A backup battery is HIGHLY recommended to prevent system failure in the event of an AC power loss. Connect the battery’s positive (+) and negative (-) terminals to the corresponding SMP10 power supply positive (+) and negative (-) DC battery input as shown above. The Altronix SMP10 includes a charging circuit for battery backup.
NOTE: For UL certified wire installations, all wire running from an eight io door controller to a lock, strike, or reader device MUST be less than 98.5 feet (30 meters).
Additional Battery Enclosure
The addition of an extra battery enclosure installed next to this enclosure is an option as long as the additional battery is connected with conduit and proper battery terminal end connectors.
Battery Maintenance, Replacement, & Disposal
Check the battery regularly and replace only with an identical battery or a ProdataKey recommended battery. Dispose of used batteries according to local regulations or the battery manufacturer’s instructions.
IMPORTANT: There is a risk of a battery explosion if the battery is incorrectly replaced.
Power Supply
An Altronix SMP10 power supply is required for the proper operation of the eight io controller. It is sold separately and NOT included with the eight io and is thus the responsibility of the installer/dealer. If required, documentation for the SMP10 is available at https://www.altronix.com/products/SMP10

Reader & Piezo Wiring Diagram
IMPORTANT: When connecting a touch io reader to an eight io controller, DO NOT connect the orange wire of the touch io reader to the - (negative) on the 'AB-' connector module as the diagram above shows. It causes the piezo to sound non-stop (it is an always-live connection).
This also applies to the yellow wire when connecting a rugged reader to an eight io controller.
If you want to have a door prop alarm, wire the piezo wire to the NO (Normally Open) on another channel or on the AUX relays.
ProdataKey does not require proprietary readers. Door controllers accept a Wiegand input, including biometric readers and keypads.
(A) Main Reader - Mounted at the door with a 22/5 or 22/6 wire running to the door controller. Wire the reader to the controller as shown above. Check polarity and voltage carefully prior to powering the controller.
(B) Piezo - An optional piezo trigger for tamper or door prop alarm connected to (-) of AUX relay. The piezo buzzer can be configured with software rules.
(A) Piezo (buzzer) - An optional piezo AUX device can be connected to the door controller to be triggered based on specific events in the system. The most typical is a door forced or “prop” alarm.
NOTE: For UL certified wire installations, all wire running from an eight io door controller to a lock, strike, or reader device MUST be less than 98.5 feet (30 meters).
If you have any questions or need help with installation or with any of the hardware described in this manual, please feel free to contact the ProdataKey Technical Support staff.
Maglock & REX Wiring Diagram
A magnetic lock, or maglock, is a locking device that consists of an electromagnet and an armature plate. Locking devices can be either fail safe or fail secure. The electromagnet portion of the lock is typically attached to the door frame; a mating armature plate is attached to the door. The two components are in contact when the door is closed. When the electromagnet is energized, a current passing through the electromagnet causes the plate to be attracted to the electromagnet, creating a locking action.
Installing a REX and Maglock to a Door Controller
(A) Maglock - When installing a maglock, it is common to install a REX (Request to Exit) at the door for free egress. Run an 18/2 wire connection from the maglock to the door controller as shown.
NOTE: If possible, when installing a maglock, avoid using and wiring up the bond sensor at the maglock for a DPS. A bond sensor is a built-in DPS on a maglock. For some unknown reason, it is not compatible with our programming. When a DPS is required, install an actual DPS.
(B) REX - Mounted in the desired location with an 18/5 wire running from the REX to the controller (18/3 wire for non-powered REX). Wire the REX to the controller and maglock (as shown above). If using a powered REX, run to any 12VDC output on the controller.
NOTE: If using Bosch or WBOX brand REX devices, they need to be wired to NO (Normally Open) and C (Common) instead of NC (Normally Closed) and C (Common).
(C) Jumper - Use the designated positive (+) or negative (-) board voltage out of (NO) and (NC). If the jumper is off, the relay is a standard dry contact needing input into common. In this diagram, the jumper is placed on the negative (-) and center pin (as shown above) to operate the maglock.
Door Position Switch (DPS) Wiring Diagram
(A) DPS - The Door Position Switch is mounted on the door frame in the desired location with a 22/2 wire running from the DPS to the controller, as shown above. When using two DPS sensors for double doors, they are wired in series with only two conductors running back to the controller.
NOTE: If possible, when installing a maglock, avoid using and wiring up the bond sensor at the maglock for a DPS. A bond sensor is a built-in DPS on a maglock. For some unknown reason, it is not compatible with our programming. When a DPS is required, install an actual DPS.
AUX Input - Rule-based inputs can be triggered by using the (A) input for something other than DPS.
NOTE: When input (A) receives a negative connection from the controller, the input is triggered until the negative is dropped. A rule can then be set up to trigger any output based on this input trigger.
If you have any questions or need help with installation or with any of the hardware described in this manual, please feel free to contact the ProdataKey Technical Support staff.
Locking Relay Wiring Diagram
(A) Diode - The provided diode must be installed when using a strike. Install at the strike with the stripe of the diode on positive and the black on negative.
IMPORTANT: The diode MUST be installed as close to the lock as possible. The best scenario (if possible) is directly across screw terminals on the lock (as shown in the first image). Another option is to splice the diode in parallel (as shown in image two below), connect it to the positive (+) and negative (-) strike wires using dolphin connectors, and crimp the wires. For questions or detailed information, please contact the ProdataKey Technical Support staff.
Installing the diode backward for a strike can cause the Cloud Node or the io door controller to reboot. A damaged or blown (dead) diode can act as if there is no diode, installed backward, or show incorrect data in the logs such as a card scan when the strike returns to the default state.
(B) NC - Normally Closed - Used for maglocks or strikes in Fail-Safe configuration. Connect the negative (-) of the Maglock or strike to NC on the door controller.
(C) NO - Normally Open - Used for strikes in Fail-Secure configuration. Connect the negative (-) of the strike to NC on the door controller.
(D) Jumper - Use to designate (+) or (-) board voltage out of NO and NC. If the jumper is off, the relay is a standard dry contact needing input into common. In the above diagram, the jumper is on (-) to operate the strike.
If you have any questions or need help with installation or with any of the hardware described in this manual, please feel free to contact the ProdataKey Technical Support staff.
Diode Setup
A diode is a standard semiconductor device integral to the safe and proper function of the door controller. It acts as a grounding tool, allowing the flow of current in one direction only. When a door strike is called / requested / sent, the coil sends a spike (also called “kickback voltage”) down the line with as much as 50,000 volts. Without a diode semiconductor, this kickback voltage would damage the control equipment. When properly installed, the diode keeps kickback voltage localized at the lock.
To protect your equipment against electrical kickback, the diode must be installed across the DC powered lock, at the strike, between positive (+) and ground (-). DC voltage is polarized. The diode must be installed in the direction shown in the illustrations: Gray stripe to positive (+), black to negative or ground (-).
Aux Output Connection Wiring Diagram
(A) AUX Device - An auxiliary device can be connected to the door controller to be triggered based on specified events in the system. The most typical is a door forced or “prop” alarm. An AUX piezo alarm can be connected as shown above. Power is required from the DC connectors of the power supply.
If you have any questions or need help with installation or with any of the hardware described in this manual, please feel free to contact the ProdataKey Technical Support staff.
Fail-Secure Door Strike Wiring Diagram
Locking devices can be either fail safe or fail secure. A fail-secure locking device remains locked when power is lost. An electric strike replaces the fixed strike faceplate often used with a latch bar. It normally presents a ramped surface to the locking latch allowing the door to close and latch just like a fixed strike.
Installing a Strike to a Door Controller
(A) Diode - The provided diode MUST be installed when using a strike. Install at the strike with the stripe of the diode on positive (+) and the black on negative (-).
IMPORTANT: The diode MUST be installed as close to the lock as possible. The best scenario (if possible) is directly across screw terminals on the lock (as shown in the first image). (B) NO - Normally Open - Used for maglocks (or strikes in fail-safe configuration). Connect the negative (-) of the maglock or strike to NO (Normally Open) on the door controller.
(C) Jumper - Use the designated positive (+) or negative (-) board voltage out of (NO) and (NC). If the jumper is off, the relay is a standard dry contact needing input into common. In this diagram, the jumper is placed on the negative (-) and center pin to operate the maglock.
NOTE: For UL certified wire installations, all wire running from an eight io door controller to a lock, strike, or reader device MUST be less than 98.5 feet (30 meters).

(B) NC - Used for maglocks (or strikes in fail-safe configuration). Connect the negative (-) of the maglock or strike to NC (Normally Closed) on the door controller.
To protect your equipment against electrical kickback, the diode must be installed across the DC powered lock, at the strike, and between positive and ground. DC voltage is polarized. The diode must be installed in the direction shown in the illustrations: Gray stripe to positive (+), black to negative or ground (-).

Wiring for Elevator Control
The eight io can be also be used for elevator control. We will show you how this is done.
1. The reader used either at or inside the elevator must be wired into the controller.
2. Using a 22/6 shielded wire to install a reader. Pull the 22/6 shielded wire through the opening of the enclosure, making sure the ends are stripped and prepped for installation. Coil the unused blue and gray wire so it won’t interfere with the installation process.
3. Remove the first reader terminal block from the controller, and wire in as follows. After installing each wire, give them a little tug to make sure they are secure. Next, we will wire floor triggers from the elevator controller.
- Red wire goes into the positive (+) terminal.
- Black wire goes into the negative (-) terminal.
- Green wire goes into the data zero (0) terminal.
- White wire goes into the data one (1) terminal.
- Brown wire goes into the (L) terminal.
4. Take any two conductor wires from the second-floor trigger. Make sure the ends are stripped and prepped for installation.
5. Install the floor trigger wires into the main relay.
6. Insert one wire into Common (C) and the other wire into Normally Open (NO). NOTE: These wires are not polarity sensitive.
7. Re-insert the controller terminal block. NOTE: Be sure to NOT use jumpers in the relays when installing an elevator control.
8. Conduct the same wiring method for each floor in sequence. NOTE: If there is a second elevator car and reader, install the reader in a separate reader port.
9. Wire the floor triggers for the second car. Ports 9 and 10 feature additional relays to add control for two additional floors.
24 Volt DC Configuration
If your installation requires 24 VDC hardware, a special configuration is needed.
1. Power the controller board using a 12 VDC Access Control Power Supply. (Connect the power supply to power input.)
2. Connect the negative wire from the separate 24 VDC power supply, and insert it into the Common (C) terminal on the main relay.
3. Power the 24 VDC hardware by connecting the positive wire from the 24 VDC power supply to the hardware.
4. Connect the negative wire from the hardware to Normally Open (NO) on the main relay. NOTE: For a 24VDC configuration, you must remove the jumper from the main relay.
NOTE: In the event that an eight io Ethernet door controller goes down and is set to DHCP, when the controller comes back online, it will be necessary to use the Lantronix device installer to see what IP address the controller is pulling. The IP address for that controller will have to be changed.
When adding an Ethernet door controller, ensure that when you are using the Lantronix device installer app that your WiFi is turned off and you are hard-wired from your laptop to the customer’s network, otherwise you will not be able to see the devices.
