Subject: Red Reader V2 Firmware 5.4.10 Update for Red Credentials Contactless Read Failure
Product(s) Affected: V2 Red Readers SKUs: RMPBV2, RMKPBV2, RGPBV2, RKPBV2.
NOTE: V1 Red Readers are not affected and do not require an update.
1. ISSUE SUMMARY
V2 Red Readers on firmware versions 5.4.6 or older contain a timer rollover bug in the Red Credential read-timing logic. After 49 days of continuous uptime, all Red Credential read attempts stop entirely, resulting in a 100 percent failure at the ~49-day mark. This issue does not affect the reader’s ability to read LF (prox), Bluetooth credentials, or Mobile Buttons in PDK Access. The issue is isolated only to reading high-security Red Credentials.
You will not see any errors in logs or system events. The reader will appear to be working normally; however, the reader will simply fail to read or respond to attempts to read Red Credential cards or fobs.
Updating readers is critical to correct this issue.
2. CAUSE
After 49 days of continuous runtime, a timer rollover in the reader’s credential logic causes a failure to read high-security credentials.
3. REQUIRED REMEDY
The permanent fix for this condition is to update affected units to firmware v5.4.10 or newer. An RMA will not be issued for any reader exhibiting this issue.
Firmware can be updated to v5.4.10 via OSDP (recommended) by PDK, or by a technician using the Wavelynx Configure app on a mobile phone (on-site requirement).
Mitigation: Since this is a timer issue, it is possible to extend functionality by power-cycling the reader.
Mitigation via System Health. Controllers can be restarted from System Health on PDK.io by clicking on the controller, opening the detail drawer, and pressing the Restart button.
On-site Mitigation: A technician on-site can also power cycle a reader by unplugging it at the controller.
4. Update Paths
Your specific update path depends on each reader’s installation.
Installation via OSDP (Recommended)
As readers come online, PDK will push the v5.4.10 firmware update to all V2 Red Readers connected on OSDP through our overnight update processes. No additional action is required.
Note: The full update over OSDP will take approximately 30 min. During this time, the reader will not accept or process Card or PIN credentials. Bluetooth and Mobile Button credentials available in the PDK Access app will continue to work.
If a customer site should not be updated automatically during overnight hours or if you prefer to perform an on-site update using the Configure app (below), notify us with the Site ID (see System Settings) by email at readerupdates@prodatakey.com or by calling PDK Support (1.801.317.8802, Option 2).
Installation via Wiegand
Readers wired for Wiegand will require an on-site update by a technician. This can be performed with the Wavelynx Configure Mobile App at each reader. This process takes approximately 2-3 minutes per reader.
The Configure app will establish a Bluetooth connection with the reader and transmit the firmware over Bluetooth. For instructions on downloading the update files, we’ve prepared a video at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lV0CSB6Z7WucpARkPGKo82Jiv-MtO8cj. Use the following firmware token within the Configure app: c-53Mr1iFV
The Configure app can be downloaded from Google Play or the App Store at the links below:
Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wavelynx.configure
iOS App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/configure/id6645735994
PDK RECOMMENDATION: While on-site, PDK encourages all installers to configure each V2 Red Reader for OSDP. This action will allow PDK to perform future updates remotely and automatically, avoiding on-site visits or unnecessary truck rolls.
New Purchase / In-Stock Readers
V2 Red Readers purchased in Distribution or in your inventory can be updated on an internal bench system or at a customer site at install time using the Wavelynx Configure app. The unit must be powered, but they do not need to be discovered and added to a controller. Alternatively, readers that are added on OSDP will automatically be updated per the information above.
