Wiring
Red | +12V | Positive pole |
Black | GND | Ground pole |
White | Data0 | Wiegand signal, D0 input or output |
Yellow | Data1 | Wiegand signal, D1 input or output |
Strip the ends of the wires, and pair the reader wires with the corresponding controller wires by inserting the exposed ends of each wire pair (one of each door controller and reader) into each end of a B-connector wire splice. Crimp the wires tightly. Repeat this process for each set of paired wires, ensuring that both wires are securely crimped inside a B-connector.
Operation
Bar code and QR code scanning operation
When the QR Reader is scanning bar codes and/or QR codes, it only recognizes the numeric characters 0–9. The QR Reader starts the scan from the first numeric character and ends when a non-numeric character is scanned. The maximum scanning length is 10 digits. If the 10-digit maximum length is exceeded, the first 10 digits are used and the reader ignores the rest of the scan.
Example 1: The QR code is ABC11223344556677889900DEF, the reader will scan: 1122334455,
Example 2: The QR code is ABC11223344FF5566, the reader will scan: 11223344
Setting the Wiegand output
The default output format of the card reader is Wiegand 26 bit. When the Wiegand output needs to be changed, please use the card reader to scan the desired corresponding Wiegand output bar code. If the reader successfully updates its output format you will hear two beeps from the buzzer.
The Wiegand output bar codes can be found at the end of this manual.

Identify what your QR code needs are and what can be supported
The PDK QR reader is designed to scan QR codes, extract an integer card number and pass them up to the controller over the wiegand protocol. The reader supports different wiegand format modes. Which mode you should use is dependent upon the maximum number of digits your QR code requires and the type of PDK controller the QR code is connected to. Below is a table describing the maximum number of digits support for each mode for each PDK controller type:
PDK SIO and EIO Controllers
Mode | 7 Digits | 8 Digits | 9 Digits | 10 Digits |
W26 | X | |||
W36 | X | X | X |
PDK Red Controllers
Mode | 7 Digits | 8 Digits | 9 Digits | 10 Digits |
W26 | X | |||
W36 | X | X | X | X |
Set the Mode
Once you have identified which mode you intend to use, install the reader like any standard reader. Once it has received power scan one of the following bar codes associated with the mode you wish you set it to:
When this barcode is read the QR reader should acknowledge with two short beeps. No further steps are necessary to set the mode.
Prepare test QR codes
The information passed down the wiegand wire is a card number integer. When constructing QR codes they must contain ascii text containing this number. The internal logic of the QR reader will scan the code and discard any non integer data or data preceding non-integer data. This means that if a code contains the text “123ABC456”, “456” will be the card number passed to the controller.
Note: You can construct your own QR codes for testing using freely available QR code generators such as the one at qr-code-generator.com. On that website select “Text” as the QR code type then enter the text “1234” and you will get the following result:
Load the appropriate card format
The QR reader is also a prox card reader and what mode the reader is put in will also determine the wiegand format that will be sent to the controller on prox card scans. PDK provides the following card formats for use with the QR reader:
cardformat-combo-26-QR-nofc.js ← Supports 26-bit wiegand, no facility code along with code modes W26 and W36.
If this format is not available on your Cloud Node, please contact our Support department and we can manually add this Card Format to your Cloud Node.
Once your card format is selected you’re done! If you’d like to verify that everything is working properly you may now navigate to Live Events, turn on Debug to see the actual card numbers coming through and scan each of the QR codes below which each contain the largest number of each length.
